Nilisha Phad

Based in Mumbai, I completed my Bachelors in Fine Art (B.F.A) in 2018 and Masters (M.F.A) in 2020, specializing in Portraiture from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai. My work explores the human figure beyond anatomy, delving into the personalities of my subjects. In my earlier figurative portraiture, I examined the interdependence between the physical body and the emotions beneath, using models as ornamental figures to convey my ideas.
My current work aims to document the identities of my models, transforming each painting into a personal narrative. My subjects are no longer just figures; they become stories waiting to be revealed. In today’s world, where identity is constantly questioned amidst rapid technological advancements, my recent work seeks to explore individuality on a deeper level. Social media and Artificial Intelligence blur the lines between reality and imitation, making self-discovery increasingly complex.
As a creator, I believe it is my responsibility to foster awareness through art. I engage my subjects in introspective conversations, uncovering their fears, joys, and the multiple roles they navigate in daily life. These insights shape my compositions, turning psychological depth into visual expression.
Through my work, I strive to bridge the gap between mind and body, promoting self-awareness as a path to harmony. My project serves as tangible evidence of this connection, offering audiences a reflective experience that encourages them to look beyond the surface—both in my paintings and within themselves.
